In spring 1989, I was wondering why Paul hadn’t joined George and Ringo at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the previous year, when the Beatles were inducted. Was it due to that old stalwart, ‘business differences’?

No, I hate that, don’t you? Business differences. I’ll tell you what it was. Apple still isn’t sorted out. It’s only twenty years later. We’ve all got our sides of the story. My story is, I just want us to divide it in four and then go home and be nice to each other. All the advisors say, ‘It’s not as simple as that.’ So it goes on forever.

One of the levers they have against me in negotiations, George and Ringo, is there’s a lawsuit about something I wasn’t supposed to do, and I think I was allowed to do it. [There was a festering dispute over differential royalty payments; an agreement would be reached in November of that year.] It’s just a difference of opinion. I rang them up. What happens with Apple is you do it all through Neil Aspinall, who’s our guy. He used to drive us through the Mersey Tunnel in a little van.

So Neil is a very strong guy from the past. We haven’t done his health any good, he had a heart attack last year. [Aspinall passed away in 2008.] I rang up and said, ‘Look, I’d really like to come to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thing.’ Cos we keep talking about a film we wanna do, The Long and Winding Road. I’d like to make it the definitive Beatles story, where we get our heads together and say, ‘That was how it was.’ Get it all in the real words.

But I keep saying to everyone, ‘We’ve gotta sort out our problems. We can’t move forward in harmony while you’re suing me. We’ve got to get rid of this lawsuit to do the Beatles film.’ I’m still hopeful we’ll do it one of these days.

I wanted that to be the reunion night. If you can drop this lawsuit, guys, or show me something that you love me … Give me a sign, a wink, and I’ll do it. It just went and went, and I kept ringing. George was in Hawaii and I got a message from him, ‘Sit tight, don’t rock the boat, don’t worry.’ But that was no good to me. I had to ring him up and say, ‘I can’t come to the Hall of Fame.’ No way am I standing up on the stage going ‘Yo! United!’ when I know they’re suing me.

So that became watered down as ‘business differences’. But it’s bloody embarrassing, cos I’d have liked to have gone along. My thinking was ‘It’ll be great, we could hold hands.’ They’d take a picture which would go around the world, and we’d use that as a jumping-off point to do our movie. It made sense to me. But it just wasn’t to be. I think some advisors kicked in somewhere.
